Apply for the MEXT Scholarship to Study in Japan in 2026

The MEXT Scholarship Programme gives Nigerian students a chance to study in Japan for free. It is funded by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. You can apply if you want to study for an undergraduate degree, master’s or PhD, or attend a technical or specialized college.

Applications must be sent as hard copies to the Embassy of Japan in Abuja. Online or email submissions are not allowed.

Choose the right scholarship category

There are four main categories. Each one has an age limit and study level:

  • Research

    For those planning to study for a Master’s, PhD, or take part in non-degree research.

    You must be born on or after 2 April 1991.
  • Undergraduate

    For those starting a university degree in Japan.

    You must be born on or after 2 April 2001.
  • Specialised Training

    For courses in areas like business, fashion, or culture at a training college.

    You must be born on or after 2 April 2001.
  • College of Technology

    For engineering or technology studies.

    You must be born on or after 2 April 2001.

Know what to send with your application

To be eligible, send all required documents. These include:

  • Application forms
  • Academic transcripts
  • Degree or graduation certificates
  • Photocopies that are notarized or attested
  • Do not send original documents like your birth certificate or diploma
  • Make sure everything is complete—missing documents make your application invalid

Only hard copies will be accepted. Send by post, courier, or submit in person to:

Follow the rules for submission

Take care to:

  • Send your full application before Friday, 30 May
  • Avoid email or online submission—they will be rejected
  • Do not include original personal documents
  • Ensure all photocopies are officially notarized
  • Include all required forms and certificates

Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.

Wait for the results

  • Only successful candidates will be contacted by mid-June
  • Selection may be postponed or cancelled if there are travel bans or curfews
