The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that it has released the results for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates. The announcement was made by its Head of National Office in Nigeria, Mr. Amos Dangut, during a press briefing in Lagos on Monday.
Mr. Dangut revealed a noticeable decline in overall student performance, particularly in the number of candidates who passed key subjects with credit.
A total of 1,969,313 candidates sat the examination conducted between April and June, out of the 1,973,365 candidates that registered across 23,554 recognised secondary schools in Nigeria.
According to Dangut, 1,718,090 candidates representing 87.24% of all who sat the exam obtained credit and above in at least five subjects, regardless of whether English Language and Mathematics were among them.
However, only 754,545 candidates (38.32%) managed to earn credit and above in a minimum of five subjects including both English Language and Mathematics, which are considered core subjects. This marks a significant drop from the 72.12% success rate recorded in 2024, indicating a 33.8% decline in performance.
Mr. Dangut also provided a gender breakdown of the candidates: 976,787 were male (49.60%), while 992,526 were female (50.40%).
In terms of inclusivity, WAEC registered 12,178 candidates with special needs. These included 112 visually impaired, 615 with hearing impairments, 52 with mental health challenges, and 37 physically challenged candidates. WAEC confirmed that adequate support was provided to these students and their results have also been released.
At the moment, the results of 1,517,517 candidates (77.06%) have been fully processed and published. Meanwhile, 451,796 candidates (22.94%) still have one or more subjects pending due to ongoing result validation processes. WAEC assured the public that the outstanding results will be released in the coming days.
192,089 results representing 9.75% of the total entries are currently being withheld due to allegations of examination malpractice. These cases, which are under investigation, involve various infractions, including smuggling of mobile phones into exam halls and the circulation of leaked question papers on social media platforms.
